BUSTED: Don’t have time to do your nutrition homework to confirm the cred of a totally veg diet? Don’t worry, the American Dietetic Associate (ADA) has done theirs so you don’t have to: “It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases,” concluded the ADA in a recent position paper.
How do you know if your diet’s “appropriately planned”? The trick to eating healthy as a vegetarian is the same trick to eating healthy as an omnivore: steer clear of greasy beige foods (French fries, onion rings, etc.) and stick to a colorful, balanced diet that includes whole grains, hearty legumes, leafy greens, and fresh fruit. Need a cheat sheet? Download The New Four Food Groups from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) and post ‘em on your fridge. Follow these recommendations, and chances are good you’ll be even healthier than your steak-chomping counterparts. “When we introduce these diets to people in research studies, we notice that nutrition improves markedly,” says Neal Barnard, MD, VT’s Ask the Doc columnist and president of PCRM.
